Offer A Room

Offer A Room

The Heartland Project has its name because we know Sydney’s LGBTIQA+ community is full of big compassionate hearts.  Given the right opportunity, hearts and homes will open in support of LGBTIQA+ people seeking asylum.  This project is just that, and the centre of our grass-roots movement are people just like you.

1. REGISTER ONLINE.
If you have a room to offer now, or if one will be available in the next 3 months you can register to advertise your room to LGBTIQA+ people seeking asylum. Just complete our simple registration process and upload your photo ID. If you don’t have a room to offer just yet, click here to join our mailing list and stay in touch.
2. ATTEND HEARTLAND HOST WORKSHOP.
After completing registration, you (and any other flatmates in your home) will be invited to attend a Heartland Host Workshop, where you will hear from people with lived experience about their journeys and the many challenges they face in navigating life today. The workshop is designed to equip prospective hosts with knowledge, skills and resources, so that they can confidently offer a room and create a welcoming and supportive home.
3. RECEIVE YOUR WELCOME PACK.
Following the Heartland Host Workshop, you will receive a Welcome Pack that includes information on sharing a home, NSW share-housing and tenancy rights and responsibilities, a template share-housing agreement, tips for a happy home, and information on further services and supports.
4. CREATE YOUR PROFILE AND POST YOUR AD.
Along with your Welcome Pack, you will receive a login that will enable you to create a profile and post a room. You will be asked to provide detailed information about the room, the house, and any housemates, as well as some pictures.

You can offer the room or property for a period of time that suits you ie. 1 month, 3 months, 6 months or indefinitely. To advertise with us, the minimum time period is 2 weeks.

5. CONNECT.
Once you have placed your room advertisement, LGBTIQA+ people seeking asylum who view your listing will have the option to send you a message which will arrive in your email inbox. From there you can correspond and arrange to meet.

The Heartland Project team is available for contact should you have any questions or require assistance with the above (add email / phone number).

Our dream is for all people seeking asylum to find a home where they are safe, respected and belong. But, we are a new project and are largely volunteer run. It is possible that there will be minor hiccups with our processes, and occasionally short delays with our response times. These will improve as we learn from our mistakes and continue to grow together. Thank you for your patience.

Like similar web-based platforms (Flatmatefinders.com and Facebook’s Queer Housing Sydney), we do not assess the suitability of any of the users on this platform. We don’t check for truth, or do background checks, police checks, or identity checks. It’s up to you to assess the suitability of any user who contacts you. We are not responsible in any way for the share-agreement negotiated between you and any person for accommodation.
